The State of The Church Address

Dear Friend and prayer partner,

Greetings! I trust that you are well and that the rich favor of God rests upon you and your loved ones. I am in St. Vincent now. I arrived Monday and spoke at a church last night. Again I was led of the Lord to zero in on reaching persons and discipling them for the kingdom and glory of God. This time I spoke on the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19. Jesus was looking for Zacchaeus but Zacchaeus was also looking for Jesus! Isn't that what we are faced with? A world in which Christ is looking for people and people are longing and looking for him but often don't even know it is Jesus that they are looking for. And then, many who are supposed to be God's people stand by and criticize those of us who reach out to those "sinners" and "worthless people"  like Zacchaeus as the crowd did that day when Jesus went to Zacchaeus' house. They said, "he's gone to eat with a sinner!"  Who should we go to?

I have been asserting in my teachings and do so here now that the church in the West has become "a comfortable place for the converted and an ecclesiastical ghetto!" We build up barriers to keep people out and become an enclave for the "ingroup"! We simply don't like certain people to come to our churches. We don't like them and we don't want them!!! We don't want them to rub shoulders with us and our children! The modern western church is busy working to keep people out of God's kingdom that Christ loves and died for!!!

As I reflect further on my two and a half months of ministry in these islands of the Eastern Caribbean, I have come to realize certain things or see them in sharper focus! One of them is that our churches are filled with either disobedient people or people who are not saved at all!!! Here me on this!

In John 15:1, 2 Jesus said this, "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful."

And then in John 15:8 he says this, "this is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."

So, what is the "fruit" mentioned here? Is it not, at least in part if not entirely, the fruit of making disciples? Isn't fruit expected to reproduce? If so, are most professing Christians reproducing? And if they are not, as the evidence suggests, are they not disobedient or may not even be Christian at all?

Can we, then be content to leave this situation as it is? Can our pastors and leaders who are supposedly called by God be content in not ENSURING that each and every member of their church or each and every professing Christian in their congregation be equipped and empowered to make disciples? Is this a choice or has Christ COMMISSIONED us (all of us Christians/believers/disciples) to go and "make disciples of all nations"?

I would love to hear what you think but even more to hear what YOU are doing to fulfill Christ's Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20? If you are not doing so, you are either disobedient or you may not be a disciple of Christ at all!! Jesus' simple but profound words in John 15:2 is that those who don't bear fruit the Father cuts off from the vine! And those who do bear fruit He prunes. Either way, there's pain in the offering!

I will have more to share in the days ahead. Enough to reflect on for now! Thanks and God bless you!

In His grip,

Courtney

Update From Dominica

Hello my friend and prayer partner,

Greetings from the nature island of the Caribbean, DOMINICA!! This place is so GREEN matched only by Ireland, to me! Beautiful!!

I arrived on Saturday night from St. Kitts and via Antigua. Got some rest yesterday morning and spoke at a youth rally/convention in the afternoon challenging the young people to be Josiah's to change their generation and the world. It was another awesome God-blessed Spirit-inspired and empowered time. The young people responded. Dozens came forward to surrender to God to be change agents, disciple-makers, missionaries, witnesses for GOD and GOD ALONE! Pray for them! They will need persons to disciple them as they grow in Christ!

Speaking of disciple-making and discipleship, I will be conducting training this week every night other than Saturday in several  parts of Dominica with the Christian Union Churches. Please pray that God moves upon His people to come out and be trained, that they will receive the word from the Holy Spirit and COMMIT to passionately and consistently disciple others including the dozens of young people from yesterday's youth convention! Pray that God  revives and renews His people here. Their District Superintendent, Rev. Marcus Francis, has a similar vision and insight to mine into the church(es) here and in the wider Caribbean. It's like we have spoken about these things before but I only met him once, briefly, in January!  As he opens his mouth and speaks it's as if, I am saying those things. The way we do church in the Caribbean and North America is wrong!!

The church has become more a social club for the converted rather than a place that goes outside its walls to seek and make disciples for the glory of God, regardless of denomination or local church benefit!! ITS THE KINGDOM OF GOD THAT MUST BE PARAMOUNT IN OUR THOUGHTS AND MINISTRIES! For the most part we seem to be doing things wrong in focusing on having crusades etc. and not on one to one disciple-making and really discipling our people into Christlikeness! This comes through personal relationships! Deep, caring, loving relationships! We have to change course or lose a generation of young people to the world and the enemy!! It is already happening if we care to look!!!

I believe then, that God is moving His prophets and people, inspired by His Spirit, to renew His church here in the Caribbean. I am  convinced of that! We are reaching a moment in time that we either see revival or a wave of persons leaving the church totally disenchanted with what is happening or NOT happening. Am I wrong on this?

Thanks always for your prayers and support. I have and continue to need them. I will be in Dominica until next week Wednesday then go to St. Lucia for a month to get rest first, and then do some more discipleship training! Keep me in your prayers for a rich and abundant ministry and for God provision, protection and care including good health!

Love and much blessing,

In His grip,

Courtney

Summer Missions Update

Dear Friend and prayer partner,

For many persons, summer is the time for vacations, growing a garden, enjoying the sun, the beach, the water. For me, it's a time to travel to various places to help equip and empower God's people in discipleship, mentoring, men's ministry and anything else that the Lord opens doors for me to do.

I'm in the island of Antigua in the northern part of the Eastern Caribbean islands. I  just came from it's sister island of Barbuda and what a time I have had there!! It's been marvellous to meet Bishop Nigel Henry of  the Pentecostal Assembly of the West Indies (PAWI) - Barbuda Pentecostal Church. What a man! It's like we have known each other for years!!! His heart pulsates with missions and a vision to reach men. It was such a joy meeting a pastor who has a vision similar to that of mine and RENEWED Ministries. And his people were so responsive to the teachings!! Oh! To God be the glory!

My son, Peter Cuffy, arranged this and I really didn't know what I was getting into. I was introduced to Clifton Francois at the radio station. This was really the idea of Gavin Otto in Antigua. Have u ever met someone who is bubbling over with passion for God that is blows you away? Have you ever met a young man who eats, sleeps, talks and walks Jesus and how we Christians should really be  the living embodiment of Christ in the world and how we should be out there making disciples for Christ? Francois is such a man and more! He runs radio and TV stations in Barbuda and elsewhere in the Caribbean and he said to me, "Rev. Courtney, you have been sent by God to affirm what I have been saying for years and taking much criticism for! You have been sent by God to hold up my  hand!!" This was MUSIC to my ears! He had me on his radio program three days in a row and the phones were ringing off the hook as we invited callers to call and discuss what is wrong with the church and why we are not making disciples. We also looked at why men are not in church as well as the problems facing family life. It was overwhelming!! People are longing for a revival in discipleship and disciple-making. People are tired of church as it is!!! We, leaders of churches and Christian ministries in the Caribbean, will have to give an account to God as to how we led His Church into a mostly social club with very little impact on the world around us and how we refused, largely, to try to reach the people that Jesus died for but many of us find uncomfortable to be around in our comfortable churches!!

As you know, RENEWED Ministries has a vision to reach males as we are deeply concerned about the absence of males in our churches as well as the fatherlessness and hopelessness facing many of our young males in the Caribbean. Peter Cuffy has caught the vision in Barbuda. For sometime now, he's begun a ministry to boys ages 7-15. They meet on Saturday mornings from 9am to 12 noon. The ministry is called RUSH:"Rising to Ultimate Successful Heights". I spoke to the boys yesterday. Over 20 of them. It was a wonderful interactive time. I asked them questions; gave them some jokes and told them of Joseph in the Bible and how he had success because he made up his mind to please God, regardless of the cost! They listened keenly. At the end, I challenged them to think of their own young lives and whether they, too, wanted to be like Joseph and give their lives to God. I had them think it through and  then decide. EVERY ONE of them did! EVERY ONE!!! Now, doesn't that tell us something? The 4/14 window says, "80 percent of all persons who come to Christ do so between ages 4 and 14! Should we not, like Peter Cuffy and those who help him, be focusing on this age group? Should we MEN in the church not take these boys and young men and mentor and disciple them to be followers of Christ? Should the WOMEN not be doing the same with our girls and young women? Is this not the surest way of keeping them in church and not losing them to the world? Is this not what Jesus would have us do?

I will leave you to answer those questions. As for me, I will continue to raise awareness of this palpable need and the vision to disciple our children, youth (males and females) and our men and boys for the glory of God!  I'm off, God willing, to my next stop, St. Kitts, to help train pastors and leaders in discipleship and disciple-making from Monday to Saturday of this week, July 9-14!

Please keep praying for me that God's hand will continue to be upon me; that He will fill me with all His fullness and use me to challenge His people to fulfill His Great Commission. Pray that our pastors and leaders and ordinary Christians that I meet will catch the vision God has for us to disciple the nations and RUN WITH IT - COMMIT TO PASSIONATELY AND CONSISTENTLY DISCIPLE THOSE THAT JESUS GIVES US WHEREVER THEY ARE! Please also pray that I will have good  health and that God will continue to  meet all my financial needs and keep  and protect me from all evil. And pray for Bishop Nigel Henry and his church, Peter Cuffy and Clifton Francois and their ministries in Barbuda and beyond as mentioned above. These are wonderful Christian brothers and sisters in Barbuda. May God's mighty hand do GREAT things in and through them in the months and years ahead!!

Thanks and God bless you richly for your partnership with me in making disciples of the nations. May God's gracious hand ever be upon you and your loved ones. Love and best wishes for His favor upon your life.

In His grip,

Courtney
